On June 7, 1993, his 35th birthday, Prince issued a press release, notifying media and fans that he had changed his name to an unpronounceable glyph that looked equal parts Egyptian and musical note, a mash up of the gender symbols for man and woman.

“It is a symbol whose meaning has not been identified,” the artist wrote. “It’s all about thinking in new ways, tuning in 2 a new free-quency.”
The exhibition is a shrine that consists of a functional throne painted by Kim MacConnel, a sculpture of a 1970’s style stereo system by Jean Lowe, and music by Prince.
